Controlling Page Turn Timing

Hi, Welcome to an advanced Read Aloud Text Highlighting tutorial. This tutorial is for ePub files created for iBooks on iOS devices but the information may be relevant and useful for other devices.

In this tutorial we will be learning how to control the timing of the automatic page turning in Read Aloud Text Highlighting.

Understanding the Basics

Page turns occur between “Two Page Spread” presentations of an ePub that has “Read Aloud” “Turn Pages – Automatically” enabled.

pageTurn

All page turns are controlled by time built into the audio files.
By controlling the length of time from start of the audio file and the start of the first word of the narration we can control the time from “Presentation of the Page” to “Audio Narration Start”.

To increase the delay before “Narration Starts” simply add some time to the beginning of the audio file. Most audio editing apps have a “Silence” generator that will do this.
NOTE: This must be done before adding the word timing labels and exporting the “Timing Text” file.
By controlling the length of time from end of the last word of the narration to the end of the audio file we can control the time from “Audio Narration End” to “Start of the Page Turn”.

To increase the delay before the “Page Turn Starts” simply add some time to the end of the audio file.

Default Pause

If you have audio on only some pages then the pages without audio will default to a pause of 3 secs.

Two Page Spread Timing

Scenario 1 :- Text on both left and right pages.

In this option, when you are using separate audio files for the left and right page you may need to adjust the end of audio file 1 and the beginning of audio file 2 to avoid a delay when the narration flows from left to right page.

Scenario 2 :- Text on the left page, no text on right page.

In this option, the narration will start as we planned but there will be an extra 3 sec pause, because of the blank page, before the page turns occurs. If you want to change this pause you will need to add an audio file with “silence” the length of pause required and a corresponding “smil” file.

Scenario 3 :- Text on the right page, no text on left page.

In this option, the narration will start 3 sec after we planned because of the 3 sec pause generated by the blank page. The page turn will occur as planned. If you want to change this pause you will need to add an audio file with “silence” the length of pause required and a corresponding “smil” file, the same as option 2.

Adding Silence

Easy ePub Creator Pro has an auto “smil” file generator that works without a matching “timing text” file. This feature generates a “smil” file with a single par id for the length of the audio file. The id  is linked to a blank span id in the xhtml file. If you use this on the pages with no text and use a blank audio file you can change the default 3 sec pause to any length you choose. Use the sample file below and try it out.

Best Compatibility

For best performance and compatibility with the most devices, a “Two Page Spread” should use 1 “Audio” file and 1 “Timing Text” file for both pages.
This works for a “Two Page Spread” with text on either or both pages. Use add “Narration” to the left page (even if it has no text on it), choose “YES” to “Is this part of a two page spread”,  and both page files will be auto generated.
